effects of purified omega-3 fatty acids on serum lipoproteins and malondialdehyde in postmenopausal fat women receiving hormone replacement therapy

چکیده
introduction regular intake of n-3 fatty acids of marine origin have desirable effects on serum lipoproteins and reduce coronary vascular disease (cvd). n-3 fatty acid supplementation decreased serum triglyceride concentrations in studies in which most of the subjects were male. the effects of n-3 fatty acids supplementation in fat women especially postmenopausal fat women have received little attention. the aim of this study was to determine whether purified n-3 fatty acids have desirable effects on serum lipoproteins, malondialdehyde (mda) and lipoprotein risk factors for cvd in postmenopausal fat women receiving hormone replacement therapy (hrt). materials and methods in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of parallel design, 35 postmenopausal women receiving hormone replacement therapy were randomly allocated to receive 2 g purified n-3 fatty acids or placebo for 10 weeks. serum lipoproteins and mda were determined on days 0 and 70. results serum levels of triglycerides (tg) decreased significantly in the n-3 fatty acids group at the end of study compared to the initial values, and also compared to control group (26%, p< 0.003 and 29%, p< 0.01, respectively)_in the n-3 fatty acids group, serum levels of tg/hdl-c decreased significantly at the end of the study compared to initial values and, at the end of the study, compared to control group as well (23 %, p <0.05 and 28%, p< 0.05). conclusion supplementation with purified n-3 fatty acids can favorably influence selected chd risk factors, particulary by achieving marked reduction in serum tg and tg/hdl-c levels in postmenopausal fat women receiving hrt.

Serum vitamin A status in women users of lowdose oral contraceptives and in postmenopausal women taking hormone replacement therapy.
Background: One of the most important nonenzymatic antioxidant defense systems is vitamin A, and is considered as an important dietary agent for reducing cardiovascular diseases. Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the serum vitamin A status in women who used low-dose oral contraceptives (OCs) containing 0.15 mg levonorgestrol and 0.03 mg ethinyl estradiol and also in...
متن کاملTotal dietary fat and omega-3 fatty acids have modest effects on urinary sex hormones in postmenopausal women
BACKGROUND Total fat and omega-3 fatty acids in the diet may affect breast cancer risk by altering estrogen metabolism. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the effects of differing total fat and omega-3 fatty acid content of diets on a panel of urinary estrogens and metabolites. FINDINGS A controlled, cross-over feeding trial was conducted in postmenopausal women using three test diets...

One of the most nervous system evolution are memory and learning in humans. Learning is a skill that enhances synaptic activity in the hippocampus of prefrontal cortex. In fact, basic passive learning is communication between the conditioned and Unconditioned stimulation. Passive learning involves three steps: habit, education and remember. According to the results of investigations, the hippoc...
متن کاملDietary omega-3 fatty acids for women.
This review details the specific needs of women for omega-3 fatty acids, including alpha linoleic acid (ALA) and the very long chain fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Omega-3 fatty acid (dietary or in capsules) ensures that a woman's adipose tissue contains a reserve of these fatty acids for the developing fetus and the breast-fed newborn infant. This ensur...
متن کاملFish intake, marine omega-3 fatty acids, and mortality in a cohort of postmenopausal women.
Intake of fish or omega-3 fatty acids may decrease risk of total and coronary heart disease death, but evidence from low-risk populations is less convincing. The authors assessed intake by using a food frequency questionnaire at baseline in a cohort of Iowa women aged 55-69 years. Among women initially free of heart disease and cancer (4,653 deaths over 442,965 person-years), there was an inver...
متن کاملThe menopause and hormone replacement therapy: views of women in general practice receiving hormone replacement therapy.
Women's views on the menopause and hormone replacement therapy were explored using a questionnaire given to women attending one general practice who were having hormone replacement therapy under the supervision of their doctor. Sixty four women (67%) responded. Although only 5% of women had requested hormone replacement therapy from their general practitioner the majority of women indicated tha...
